We’re delighted to share that The Christie Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) has been awarded the Innovation Award at the prestigious Educate North Awards, celebrating educational excellence across the North of England.
This recognition highlights the incredible work led by Steve Harcourt, who has developed a dedicated Youth Support Education and Employment Mentor service over the past 18 months. Offered two days a week, this initiative supports Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA) undergoing cancer treatment with tailored guidance on education and employment.
As the first TYA centre in the UK to receive AQA Unit Award Scheme (UAS) accredited status, The Christie has enabled access to over 17,500 online accredited courses, with more than 100 young patients successfully completing at least one course.
The programme also includes an emerging employment preparation scheme, now partnered with 40+ organisations spanning industry, recruitment, and apprenticeships.
As a result:
- 30+ TYAs have taken part in mentoring, volunteering, or work experience.
- 12 have secured apprenticeship placements.
- 7 have moved into full-time employment.
This forward-thinking approach demonstrates the positive impact of integrated education and career support within a healthcare setting— and sets the stage for national leadership in this space. A group from The Christie PTC, along with patients involved in the programme, proudly attended the awards evening to celebrate this achievement.
